Sinclair Lewis Was Wrong

During the Great Depression as Hitler began to rear the ugly specter of Nazism, Sinclair Lewis wrote “It Can’t Happen Here”. The book, largely ignored by todays readers, “juxtaposes sharp political satire with the chillingly realistic rise of a president who becomes a dictator to save the nation from welfare cheats, sex, crime and a liberal press.” Lewis was prophetic. “It can’t happen here” can and has happened with the awful election of a self serving, disgusting man who is enthralled with dictators, power and personal gain. As hooded and arm raising followers fall at his feet, Donald Trump has fulfilled Lewis’ vision. His constant attacks on the press, on immigrants, on anyone who doesn’t fall in step with his vague policies and his love affair with Vladimir Putin are indicative of a powerful and evil swell of fascism in America. Physical attacks on those who disagree with him which characterized his campaign are reminiscent of Nazi Storm Troopers attacks in 1930's Germany. More and more Trump’s own party recognizes the potential for America’s fall at the hands of an unbalanced man. Resistance movements are forming but no one who values their freedom can remain silent in the face of this evil.
