A KIND OF HELL: THE AVAILABLE ALTERNATIVES

With great curiosity many of my students have on several occasions asked me to describe hell to them. Sometimes I really wonder whether there could be any hell worse than simply being completely undisturbed. I believe that life is deadly with boredom when there is neither risk nor discomfort in it.
There are many in society who reject the idea of hell and go as far as to deny its existence. But is hell real or is it a place of fire and brimstone or perhaps a state of being? Most people try to avoid any discussion of hell perhaps because they are afraid of offending others. But generations of religious people have believed that hell is real as a place of torment and gnashing of teeth
A cartoon I saw recently pictured a woman in a bookstore saying to a clerk as she perused a book.” I’d like to be moved, but not upset.”
Living such undisturbed life in my view causes us to ignore life’s available alternatives. This borders on a kind of laziness, indecision, and apathy which in turn creates hell - a sameness that lasts forever.
Life to me is for venturing, and that means taking and using the available alternatives plus all the risks involved for the sake of something worthy and good. There is no other road I see to inner satisfaction except that which leads by way of discontent with the way things are.

GRACIOUS LORD, GRANT US YOUR DIVINE DISCONTENT WITH THINGS THE WAY THEY ARE AND .SAVE US FROM THE COMPLACENCY OF THOSE TOO BLIND TO SEE LIFE’S ALTERNATIVES WE PRAY.
