GOVERNMENT OF CANADA TO FUND SOLAR HYDROGEN ENERGY CORPORATION'S PROCESS FOR PRODUCING HYDROGEN FROM WATER VAPOUR Solar Hydrogen Energy Corporation announced that it has signed a contribution agreement with the CANMET Energy Technology Centre of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). Under the agreement NRCan will provide SHEC LABS with $200,000 towards a $454,000 project to help further advance its Thermocatalytic Hydrogen Production Process. The remainder of the funding is being provided by SHEC labs. "The Government of Canada is committed to the development of clean energy technologies that will help reduce emissions associated with climate change," said Herb Dhaliwal, Minister of Natural Resources Canada. "SHEC Labs' technology to produce hydrogen will not only help reduce emissions but will contribute to building Canada's hydrogen economy." SHEC labs is a research and development company that was incorporated in 1996 and has developed a number of technologies for the solar thermo catalytic production of hydrogen. The process developed by SHEC labs dramatically lowers the temperature at which hydrogen can be extracted from water. At the heart of the technology is a proprietary catalyst conceived and invented by SHEC labs. There already exists a market for hydrogen in the billions of dollars in sectors such as fertilizer production, hydrogenated food processing, chemical processing, methanol production, petroleum refining and a number of other industries. The fuel cell, which is today being developed by many companies, requires hydrogen as its fuel to create electricity. When hydrogen is used in a fuel cell, the only emission from the fuel cell is water vapor. However, the majority of hydrogen produced today is by steam reforming fossil fuels. The process being developed by SHEC labs uses concentrated sunlight as its energy source. Hydrogen produced from renewable energy sources has the potential to dramatically reduce emissions and could ultimately have the ability to produce zero emission hydrogen. SHEC LABS is currently seeking strategic partnerships as well as institutional and private investors. To date all research and development has been privately funded. Funding from the CANMET Energy Technology Centre will allow SHEC labs to transfer its proprietary technology from the lab to commercial applications, supplying existing markets, and ultimately the emerging fuel cell market, with a clean, renewable source of energy.
