Sugar “poisoning” revisited

By Dr. Michael Basso

During the last few weeks I have been constantly reminded of the past. My…high school reunion is coming up along with loads of communication about the past, I am selling or re renting an antique property in Harrison, and last but not least, I have been reminded of an old article about the evils of excessive sugar in our diet.

Diseases due to Sugar-Poisoning, by Dr. George M. Gould, was first published in the Medical Review of Reviews in July 1910.

When viewed within the context of modern science, this insightful article can become even more important for our selves and our children.

Gould starts, “It has lately (1910) been urged, and from a medical standpoint, everyone could eat any amount of sugar ..candy…not only without harm to health but with positive physiological advantage…” While most folks know better, even the health food stores promote mega billions of dollars doing just that.

The author goes on to say that “…it is been growing clearer to me that many patients do not get well because they live too exclusively on sugary and starchy foods….” And paraphrasing that when the parents stopped sugar and most starches, “…there was a most gratifying disappearance of nervousness, fickleness of appetite, colds and vague manifold ailments.”

Modern scientists now know that not only can sugar cause symptomatic blood sugar swings, but that sugar can disrupt important metabolic nutritional factors including, the B Vitamins, Calcium, Magnesium and Zinc. When the balance of these factors goes awry, the human nervous system is deprived of these important balancing factors, colds can become worse as way for the body to eliminate poisons and we tend to crave sweets as a way to avoid suffering from blood sugar swings.

The article goes on to imply that sugar can also have a direct impact on the manifestation and relief of epileptic seizures. ‘How ridiculous!,” some of you might conclude.

However, please note that magnesium and zinc are required to regulate excitatory brain chemicals, including glutamate. Glutamate can help start or make seizures worse and too much can make a person very nervous.

Especially during this time of High School and College graduations, the 4th of July and other gatherings galore, it is also important to think about the how much sugar is biochemically related to alcohol. In fact ‘sugarholics’ tend to become alcoholics, many of whom become drunken drivers. Sadly, many lethal driving accidents are caused by drunken teens.

Think about the sugar related ramifications. If sugar can increase the craving for alcohol, then sugar can lead in some case to alcohol related deaths, including car accidents.

Have a safe 4th of July and parents please do your part to stop underage drinking and teen drug use. Remember, it’s built into the genes for kids to copy what you do!
