Amelia Earhart:Beyond the Grave, written by W.C.Jameson, published by Taylor Trade Publishing, 2016

Determining what really happened to Amelia Earhart goes way beyond conspiracy theory. Did Amelia and her navigator, Fred Noonan, really crash land, as maintained by the U.S. Government, near Howland Island in 1937? If so, why was no trace of the wreckage of their Lockheed L-10E Electra ever recovered? Or did they land, inexplicably, in the Marshall Islands, only to be captured by the Japanese and then transported to Saipan? Were they on a secret aerial reconnaissance mission? And were they thereafter, from 1937 to 1945, held captive by the Japanese only to be returned to the United States after the war where they lived out the remainder of their lives under assumed identities?

The author, W.C. Jameson, has taken a plethora of theories and condensed them into a concise narrative. The theory that remains the most intriguing is that Amelia survived the war but suffered immensely. It is suggested that she was held captive at Weihsien Concentration Camp where she may have been coerced into acts and services that she, as well as the U.S. Government, considered too traumatizing for the American public to accept. Upon liberation, she was transported to Korea, debriefed extensively, and then flown to Rumson, New Jersey, where, she was resettled with the assistance of Cardinal Francis Spellman and the Catholic Church under the assumed identity of Irene Craigmile. She later married Guy Bolam, a British citizen, and became known as Irene Craigmile Bolam.

It should be noted that the theory that Amelia Earhart and Irene Craigmile were the same person was first postulated in the book Amelia Earhart Lives, authored by Joe Klass, published by McGraw-Hill in 1970 (later withdrawn from publication under threat of litigation). The book includes research conducted by Joe Gervais, who first met Irene Craigmile Bolam at a meeting of the Early Fliers Club at West Hampton Air Force Base on August 8, 1965. When Gervais introduced himself to Irene, he was stunned by her resemblance to Amelia. Members of the Ninety-Nines, a woman's flying club, were also invited to the meeting. Ironically, the first president of the Ninety-Nines was … Amelia Earhart.

Irene Craigmile Bolam died on July 7, 1982. She was seventy-eight years old. According to her will, her body was dedicated to science, with the understanding that her corpse would never be fingerprinted. She was eventually cremated and buried in an unmarked grave. The mystery lives on.

It is really unfortunate that so much speculation and written works have been focused on Amelia's mysterious disappearance. There were several other early women flyers whose legacy is lost in the limelight cast by Ehrhart. Maybe someday, real evidence of the plane will be found and from that a determination of how she died or survived be finalized.

Without reading the details, I can easily see the story of Irene Craigmile Bolam of being a creative piece of fiction that, through repetition, is now becoming thought of as fact.
