Too many gardeners have no idea how to water their garden effectively and save water. Most gardeners take the lead from nature and water at least 30 minutes several times a week when nature doesn’t provide. Then leaves on plants turn yellow and the unaware gardener scratches their head trying to solve the puzzle.
Sometimes following ‘mother nature’ isn’t the right approach. A garden whether it be vegetables or your flower garden needs a chance to absorb the moisture unless you’re on pure sand. Try watering for 10 minutes and then giving the garden a 5 minute rest. Water again for 15 minutes and then give the garden a 10 minute rest. Finish the job with 5 minutes of watering.
If you water for 30 minutes or more continuously the water can’t be absorbed into the soil and it runs off meaning that you will water more frequently. Using the watering technique outlined above does take more time but the labor can be reduced by installing a timer on your watering system. You can also water only once a week during most the summer using the watering technique described in this article.
