Every month Olbrich Gardens on Madison’s near east side – 3330 Atwood Avenue- has classes for toddlers through seniors. For the remainder of October there are several interesting classes offered.
Scarf dying
On Saturday, October 30 and November 13 from 9-11 am there is a class on Garden Silks. You will learn to create dyed silk scarves using common garden plants and from items in grocery store including blueberries and tea. The class will be taught by Shelly Ryan, host of Wisconsin Public Television’s Wisconsin Gardener. Plan on completed scarves taking four weeks but you will learn the technique in the October 30 class. Each participant will leave with four dyed scarves – one that has been started for you and three others that you will start. Registration deadline is October 21 for the October 30 class and November 4 for the November 13 class. Cost is $75 or $60 for Olbrich members. All materials are included.
Creating a back yard birdscape
Saturday, October 30 from 1-2:30 pm there will be a class on creating a habitat for birds in your backyard taught by Mariette Nowak, author of Birdscaping in the Midwest . The class will focus on providing food sources for birds by growing native plants that offer both nutrition and a natural habitat. The food sources include those that are available all seasons such as berries, nuts and seeds. The registration deadline is October 21. Cost is $15 or $12 for Olbrich members.
