Madison has a chapter of Community Shares of Wisconsin which is dedicated to helping many not-for-profit organizations with fund raising. Their mission statement reads:
Together with its donors and member nonprofits Community Shares Wisconsin
addresses social, economic and environmental problems through grassroots
activities, advocacy, research, and public education.
A total of 64 nonprofit groups belong to Community Shares. Community Shares supports their member nonprofits by raising money through workplace giving and from individual donors and by providing training, technical support and networking.
In Madison the sister organization to Community Shares of Wisconsinn is Community CHIP which is in a fundraising partnership with Willy Street Co-op. When purchasing products at Willy Street Co-op you will be asked if you would like to “chip”. By answering yes, a 1% donation will be added to your purchase. For a $50 bag of groceries that’s only 50 cents. The Co-op collects the money and sends 100% of the donation to Community Chip.
While it may seem like a small donation – chips add up to dollars. Last year CHIP donations amounted to over $101,000 for local non-profit organizations. CHIP contributions are not tax deductible.
Some of the nonprofit organizations benefiting from CHIP include: ABC for Health, Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups, Legal Action of Wisconsin, Sustain Dane, River Alliance of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Council of the Blind and Visually Impaired, Wisconsin Literacy Inc. and others.
