Composting has become a way of life to many gardeners whether you have an organic garden or just want to add nutrients to the soil. For many composting can be frustrating because material is collected for months and the result is a bushel or less of useful compost.
What is the solution? Use two compost bins. Using two bins solves the problem when you live in Temperature Zone 4-5 , like Madison. Place one compost bin near your home so that trudging through the snow in the winter to add composting material is not unbearable. Place a second compost bin in a location where it gets at least 6-8 hours of sun a day. The black material of the bin attracts and conserves heat from the sun. Your compost ‘cooks’ and the material will decompose at a faster rate.
The winter bin can be left alone in the summer. In the fall add the material that has been cooking all summer to your garden before the first snow fall. The summer bin will continue to ‘cook’ during the winter. In the spring material can be taken from the winter bin and added to your garden.
By using two bins a gardener can count on adding compost to the garden twice a year and creating a cycle for creating and maintaining nutrients for garden use.
