DAVID WISEHART: Who do you imagine is your ideal reader?

DANA TAYLOR: I hope that mainstream America will give it a chance. I’m a middle class person, a wife, mother, grandmother. I have a college education, but not a string of Ph.D’s behind my name. There are many people coming from traditional Judeo/Christian backgrounds that are dealing with health and emotional issues that will find my book encouraging. A lot of people have felt boxed in by traditional thinking and are afraid of breaking the box. Ever-Flowing Streams doesn’t break the box, but it expands the barriers.

DAVID WISEHART: What was your journey as a writer?

DANA TAYLOR: Writing has always been a steady drum beat in my life. When I was about eighteen, I heard my mother telling relatives, “Dana’s going to write a book someday, and you’re all going to be in it.” That was news to me. At that time I was a theater major. But, mothers know these things. In college, I wrote show scripts. As a new mother I wrote an article that sold to The Ladies Home Journal. I journaled and tried to write novels. At twenty-eight I “heard” a voice tell me, "You need more life experience to write. You’ll write later." So, I lived and scribbled. In the 1990s I joined the OK City Chorus of Sweet Adelines and for seven years I was the show writer/producer. That was great fun. Then, in 2001, after working five years as my husband’s secretary in his law practice, I was a mess from the stress. Thankfully, he fired me. Suddenly, I had time. My daughters were teenagers. The house was quiet. I sat down at the computer one day and heard—"Now." I began the first scene of Ain’t Love Grand?, which was a healing, joyful experience. It was picked up by the first publisher I sent it to and won the Golden Quill Best First Book Award. I joined the RWA and learned a lot about writing through that association and wrote several more novels. But my life was taking other turns and I think my writing in the future will be used in ways I don’t really know at the moment.

DAVID WISEHART: What is your writing process?

DANA TAYLOR: The inspirations bubble up from the oozing tar pits of the creative conscious between 4am-6am. Later, between 9am-3pm, I hunker down in front of the computer and try to find words for the mind pictures.

DAVID WISEHART: What authors most inspire you?

DANA TAYLOR: I love writers who can turn a phrase in unexpected ways. Stephen King in The Dead Zone was a revelation. Lately, I’ve discovered Edward C. Patterson through the Indie Authors, who is an amazing writer. One of my favorite books is Peace Like A River by Leif Enger for its storytelling and spirituality. I’ve enjoyed the whimsical books of Sarah Addison Allen. I love stories that break out of the third dimension.

DAVID WISEHART: What one book, written by someone else, do you wish you'd written yourself?

DANA TAYLOR: The Time Travelers Wife by Audrey Neffenegger.

DAVID WISEHART: How have you marketed and promoted your work?

DANA TAYLOR: This is a new release. I’ve got the usual Twitter, FB, Author’s Den, Constant Contact avenues in place. This book does present a real challenge in marketing because it doesn’t fit into any proven genre. I’m hoping for a lot of WOM—word-of-mouth.

DAVID WISEHART: Why publish on Kindle?

DANA TAYLOR: It’s where the readers are. Authors can go directly to the audience without any middle men. Amazon has made it fast, easy and affordable. The Internet allows me to market all over the world from my den. I have my books on other outlets, but Kindle is where the action is.

DAVID WISEHART: What advice would you give to a first-time author thinking of self-publishing on Kindle?

DANA TAYLOR: Don’t rush to publish. Have your book edited by at least eight different people.
