When my son was small, he would ask, "Say good words to me, Mommy." Isn't that what we want from co-workers and fellow church goers?
So many folks don't know how to "say a good word." They relish spotting the inconsistencies in others. At my workplace, you would almost believe people got bonuses from finding flaws in others. Otherwise, why would people waste all their days in critical phone calls and vindictive gossip clusters?
In church life, I've known people who thought they had the gift of discernment. They use it a license for flaying people with their tongue. Some gift! I'd rather have chicken pox than a gift like that. It would be less cruel to run around slicing tires than to cut away at folks' character.
On the other hand, I've found that saying a kind word or smiling in any setting is like placing a small gift on someone else's plate. I have several friends who write me cheery e-mails all day. We never get to gossiping about people, we are so consumed with prayer requests. What a boost when I see Rachel's, or Karen's, or Tammy's name in my e-mail box! I can't wait to see what they wrote this time.
Once, I shared space with a teacher. The only divider between our rooms was a curtain. Sometimes, his class got really loud. I keep a quiet room where kids can come study, so it could have really bothered me. Instead, I began to listen to what topics Mr. Ewing was teaching.
He always engaged the students in learning. They excitedly talked about the subject, debating and discussing. I finally wrote my department head about what a fine teacher Mr. Ewing was, and what an example to me. She forwarded my letter to the principal and to Mr. Ewing, who beamed. He's one of those quiet but efficient teachers who would never promote himself or take over a meeting, but the quiet applause meant a lot to him.
I resolve to spend my days putting verbal roses on doorsteps. Why throw a snake on their porch when a bouquet will probably result in friendship? As to spiritual gifts, may the Lord adorn me with one of encouragement and mercy.

You are so right about saying good things to people. I don't always do this, but I am striving to. My grandboys, especially the two year old,James, has helped me with this so much because I love him so much and am so amazed at the happiness he has brought into our lives. I enjoyed your article. Have a good day.
