I heeded my mom, and my children heeded me. Now they are teaching others these simple lessons that are getting them through life.

At work, I am surrounded by children who are untutored in the ways of the world.  These young people annoy me.  More than that emotion, I feel pity for them.  They are doomed to fail like their parents, who give them too much spending money and too little love.

I heard one student today searching around for his dad's phone number.  He tried to call his mom, then finally reached his grandmother.  She did not give him the number.  It really broke my heart.

Most of the lessons Mom taught me were unappreciated until I got as old as rocks.  Now, they seem like normal common sense.  My middle daughter told me today that she has hauled these thoughts out for her college room-mates' edification.  I reminded her, "You covered your ears and squeezed your eyes shut when I tried to tell you that."

She still retained the precept, however. Here are a few choice words to live by:


If you talk nicely to people, they will probably reciprocate.  If not, consider that they have a problem and you did your job. 
You are special and unique.  God made you that way, because he has a job for you that no one else can do.

Everything comes from somewhere.  Money doesn't drop like manna out of heaven.  IE, when you are a teenager and you want many things, you might consider getting a job. 


You are a leader.  Choose to lead people wisely.

Don't be afraid to take a risk.

Pray about everything, because God cares about the details of your life.  Plus, He likes to hear from you.

It is never foolish to love someone.  Don't be so worried about your pride that you fear unrequited love. Love improves those who experience it, and it is good practice for when someone comes along and reciprocates.


At the same time, have some self-respect.  Don't pursue someone who does not cherish you. Never tolerate verbal or physical abuse.  And don't use it on others.


Quality work and original thought will make you stand head and shoulders above your peers.  The same thing is true of moral purity.

The world needs what you have to offer.  It's your turn;  step up and take your best shot.  Enjoy every minute of it.  Then teach your children.
