Our sons must treat women like people, but the females also must respect themselves enough to stop a marauding guy.
When my daughter was 15, she regularly threw boys into the bushes. One of the boys' mothers asked, "Why do you let her do that?" I couldn't tell her that her son kept making dirty suggestions to Krystal. Why couldn't I tell her? Because I had already tried to discuss her son's behavior in smaller issues--he was in my Sunday School class. Realizing that Krystal would face lots of approaches ranging from flirtation to harassment, I chose to train her instead of training the whole world to treat her right. Anyhow, that boy soon gave up on Krystal as conquest and went on to more amenable females. Krystal has always had guy friends and boy friends, but no one tampers with her heart or body against her will.
If her daddy had known the whole story, we would have had it out with the family. I know well what the other couple would have said: "How can you say that about our son? Your daughter is leading him on." So I coached her to take care of the matter herself.
I have a few truths that I've drilled into my girls:
*You are a princess, a child of God.
*You deserve love. Wait for it.
*Keep your integrity. Don't hand out physical affection, hoping to gain attention.
*Sexuality is not a toy for middle schoolers to try out. It is God's gift to married people.
*You clothes convey your intentions. Dress wisely.
*Have plenty of guy friends and get to know the male mind before you "go steady."
* Run prospective boyfriends by Dad and your brother. They can spot a phony more quickly than I can, because they are males, too.
I truly believe that these are some starting principles that kept my girls from being trampled and disregarded by men over the years. A guy who won't shake the dad's hand is not worth a single date.
My son still asks of every new date the girls have, "Can I take him? Am I bigger than him?" I have found that his attitude toward women is that they all have big brothers and dads willing to defend. Not a bad deterrent from using women as toys! Ladies, we can't stop a rapist with a gun, but we can stop those worthless guys who think we like to be used or even teased in an insulting way. Nearly every woman recalls an incident of harassment or molestation. When I was working a temp job at a candy factory, I noticed that one big, middle aged male put on the most humiliating show. He seemed to pick a lot on one woman in particular. She was a meek, quiet, married woman. The guy would brush against her suggestively from behind. "There, now you can tell your husband you've already had sex today. You don't need any from him." I felt so sorry for her. She would try to smile and act like it was all a big joke.
When the galoot turned his attentions to me, I said, "Don't bother. I have a jealous husband who will be on your doorstep tonight, asking if you're ready to meet your maker." He laughed, but he then kept a distance from me. I had already resolved that if he laid a hand on me, I would go to management and lodge a complaint. Nobody, male or female, should put up with unwanted joking, touching, or insinuations. In contrast to the relationship cave men out there, good guys capable of monogamy are still looking for women mature enough for a long-term relationship. Ladies, we have to look hard and look deep. We must quit rewarding the playboys and bad boys of the world with our hearts. And they never deserve access to our bodies.
