This opens with a bang and ends with a twist. I found it much better than Second Sight, which goes to show that one read doesn't always show the true skill of an author.
The chemistry between Lavinia Lake and Tobias March flares like the match of Emerson and Amelia Peabody--my favorites in Elizabeth Peters' mysteries. They are mature and witty and no simpletons. The mystery is compellingly diverting.
However, the books deserve an "R" rating, although the "romance" is not random and irresponsible. I still have questions about consummating a passion in a carriage, no matter how rainy the night. But then, as a teenager, I never attempted anything in the back seat of a Chevy. Not my style...never was.
I'll give this a 3 1/2 star rating out of 5.
