Deb Grantham is a proud but disadvantaged daughter of good family fallen on hard times. She has many admirers, but only one suitor--a young man whose family will reject an ineligible match with one of "Faro's daughters." The term refers to a card game. Max Ravenscar is out to prevent his young cousin Adrian from making a "cake" of himself.
This novel comes from the seamier side of London, but there is still no explicit writing--just plenty of witty dialogue and appealing characterization.
Max obtains the loans on Deb's aunt's mortgage, and he attempts to make her knuckle under. Her temper erupts. She kidnaps the loathesome man. Can't tell more without giving it away--but it's a romance, after all. I would so much prefer to read anything by this author than much modern stuff available--never a boring page.
