This author has a treasure trove of novels out. I read that she is one of Mary Balogh's favs...
and Mary's taste is faultless! I found This Heart of Mine to be touching and complex and funny. I've also read Breathing Room. Both are entertaining contemporary romance. Both are a tad difficult to believe in that the heroes are respectively a football star and a movie star. But who cares? If I wanted reality, I would watch a documentary. I want touching. I want a heroine who has elements of my personality, who grows and learns as she goes.
If these books are typical of Phillips' work, I'll be a happy reader for a long time. I found messages in her work that I like: love is for all ages. Forgiveness is possible. Meaningful work apart from love loses meaning.
Possibly, Phillips sees in her male leads a correlation with the lords and ladies of Regency England. She certainly makes allusions to Heyer's work frequently.
I was vaguely disappointed in Kleypas' Mine 'Til Midnight. The same with Hunter's Lessons of Desire. Those are two of my favorite authors, but when a writer sets high standards, less-than-stellar works are a bit of a letdown.
