by Georgette Heyer. If you like War and Peace, or Gone with the Wind, this book is up your alley.
It's not like any other Heyer I've ever read. It's more historical and complex. It deals with the effect on relationships that come with war. All the forced gaity and heightened romance and foolish posturing are portrayed here with vivid detail. This also reminds me of the recent movie, Pearl Harbor.
Wellington at Waterloo certainly takes center stage. If you loved Mary Balogh's Slightly Tempted and Slightly Sinful, this book helps paint the backdrop of Brussels. As an American, I've been disgracefully uninformed about the Napoleanic Wars and the Peninsular Campaign. Through novels like this, I'm beginning to get a grip on their impact in history.
The love stories in this book are complex and defy even beginning to describe. All in all, Infamous Army feels more like Tolstoy than Heyer. I'm sure it was exhausting to write--it's challenging but delightful to read.
