I was tired of Regency, wanted a little contemporary romance. I was just exploring Crusie's novels. Came across this book about a food editor, a couple of old mobsters, a hitman and his buddy. Lot's of bad words here, kind of like a an Al Pacino movie. Not my kind of language, typically.
But it's so funny! An unique and quirky, and romantic in odd ways. Crusie really goes a different direction here, but I LOVED it.
Interspersed with all the action are Cranky Agnes' food columns:
"It's His Fault Your're Fat"
"Heartache often drives us to consume things we wouldn't otherwise, such as an entire pint of Caramel Pecan Perfection high-fat ice cream, covered in ganache, the crack cocaine of frozen dairy. Twelve hundred calories per pint, six hundred and eighty of which are fat calories, but it only dulls the pain for the moment, there's that carb fog while you're standing at the sink shoving it in your face, and then it's over and you fell...used. Like a cheap pickup the Dove people seduced and abandoned in your kitchen, leaving you with sticky hands and an empty cup and a still-broken heart, except now you're mad at Dove, too."
That's just an intro to one of the chapters. If you'd like to read something really funny but different, one of those books that shows how love can spring up in the weirdest situations, try this . Agnes is sad to lose her dream--she wanted to be "Scarlet O'Hara with butter." But after a very trying week, she finds that messy reality often trumps tidy dreams.
