Since I use my iPad at work, I'm always looking for a newer, better way to teach concepts.
This week, I found Motion Math HD. A ball drops, then after some preliminary bouncing, the player must use the ball to guess fractional portions of a number line. It's pretty incredible--the motion, the art. A little more pricey than some apps at 3.99, it is much easier to use and more fluid and appealing. Best of all, it truly teaches the concept of what fractions look like in real life. There are 3 levels. I even like to play!
I'm giving AP US History a try, as well as "US Presidents." The presidents game is not that impressive, but it wasn't too pricey, either. I'm also trying "Science Facts," which is interesting, but not that oriented to real science. It's more of a "did you know" thing. No game invovled.
For my preschool grandson, I have several apps that he can work by himself. These, I highly recommend:
Discover Musical Instruments--beautiful, works well, picture of instrument with sound, name of musical instrument in English or French. Caed can work it easily.
Explore the Animal Kingdom--very similar, maybe the same company? Excellent, beautiful, even a 2 year old can work it.
Oceans letter writer--amazing illustrations that go with each letter; wondrous backgrounds, pleasant music, letter recognition program.
For older children, either elementary or middle schoolers who need to catch up:
1000 sight words--excellent drill!!!
Irregular Verbs--Neungyule app--excellent verb drills and a verb game. Great for my ESL students.
Math magic--catch-up math--can be set to varous levels. Some good built-in counting visuals.

This is a fabulous app! Like carrying 1000 flashcards in your pocket. Good for ESL and dyslexic students. Having great results with one student in particular.
This app helps students play a game that reinforces fractions, decimals, equal values. Cool and very fun, but academic, also.

Khan Academy—excellent biology app. I’m using it to study for the excet certification for life science, am using it with exit level TAKs testers.
