We've often seen how a character in a TV series can spawn a separate series of their own. Take friends, at the end of that Joey had his own spin off. Programmes like Dallas had spin offs like Knotts Landing.
Now it seems characters from books can achieve enough interest to merit a work of their own. Take for instance my own books. In the first one ,My Barsetshire Diary, my unwelcome alarm clock was Oscar the cat. He also appeared in the prequel The Queen's Envoy. It seemed that people who enjoyed either or both books always had to say how much they liked him.
Oscar himself is now an elderly cat and obviously in cat terms is a bit of a sage, It seemed therefore only fitting that those people who wanted to know more about him would want to see him more. As my third book is not quite finished I started a blog from Oscar on my own website.......BIG MISTAKE as he's now much more popular than the rest of the site.
( OK, I confess he blackmailed me into it since I'd used his real name in the books rather than protect the innocent as he calls it. Huh, inocent and Oscar don't go together at all).
He dispenses his wisdom to the masses once a week and even has questions adressed directly to him, almost like people still write to Sherlock Holmes to ask for his help. Oscar's blog is now a weekly event and I'm told when big enough I should create a book for him.( At least HE tels me that).
Anyone with an interest in cats can pop along and meet him on my site. There's even a picture of him on my page. Just don't expect any autographs.
