Life is about trial and error. And life is about being humble and grateful. Think I'm lying, things will stop working out for you.
He uttered in tears, "Nothing ever works out for me."
Simply, it's how the real world is. In school, we're rewarded for good grades, but in the real world those grades are just letters of the alphabet. In family, we're loved, but in the real world love doesn't even exist. Everyone is their one-man army. Everyone is in it for themselves. Everyone is careless about you and your feelings. Simply, it's how the real world is.
It's crazy, but it's fair. In life, you can either work for what you want or sit back, while someone take your weakness for granted. Throwing your ability away, again and again, is pathetic. Use it to your advantage. Use what you have to get what you want. Now, I'm not saying go scrolling down the street, but use your brain instead of giving it. He was crying because, "nothing ever works out for him", but crying is going to get him nowhere. What is going to help him begins with the letter the P; a pill. He has to shallow the pill, because it's how the world is. And yes, I told him to shallow the pill, and even gave him two just in case he dropped one.
What we fail to realize is that the real world makes us swallow our pride. We think that we deserve this, but the real world gives us that. And we can't fight it, because that's all that we've been given. So, it humbles us. It makes us grateful for what we thought we were more deserving of. It's crazy, but it's fair. Even when we think that we're cutting corners, we're actually falling behind for what we fail to do. Better said, we think that there is an easy way out of life, but there isn't. With life, you either go head first or go head first.
It's that simple.
Nothing has worked out for him, but that's what he says. Sometimes, we're so spoiled that we fail to recognize the things that have come together for us. When that is the case, nothing else will come to us, because we haven't even learned how to honor and appreciate what we already have. It's crazy, but it's really not. Taking things in life for granted ultimately comes back to bite you in the rear. Just know, chances run out. Luck runs out. And then you'll be at rock bottom, again.
The real world has its crazy ways to make us stronger, independent and wiser but it's all for the good. Instead of waiting until you hit rock bottom, figure out what you need to do, to make things work for you. Trust me, it will not be easy and the work is not always joyful, but it's worth it. Go head first and take on the obstacles like the solider that you are. And don't shake your head, because you are a solider, you just have to unload your weapons and your greatness will prevail.
It's that simple.

Like you wrote, the best thing is to soldier on, regardless of the obstacles ahead.
