Understanding why diets fail

This article ranked 1 out 46, that I have written on Helium on Aug 2010. It discusses the reasons as to why the diets that are out there fail to achieve the desired and promised results.

What is a diet? Is it a strict regime one follows on a daily basis, an extreme cut in calorie intake or is it a replacement of certain foods by others? A diet need not be any one of the above although it could be a combination of all.

The reasons that diets as advertised and marketed on TV fail is that they are dependent on the nature of the diet or the supplements provided in the program as well as on a set number of days. Some diets concentrate on prepared meals, others on pills, and some on supplements and yet all of them have one thing in common; timing.

It is a known factor that if one sheds weight very quickly, one is most likely to regain that weight and maybe more as quickly also. So why aren't these diets working? For one the idea itself is psychological. In other words the person
following a certain diet develops the belief that it can be done only with the help of these diets. So the day that person stops, the mind sends a signal to the body to take a breather and relax sending the person back to mode one, the initial step before starting that diet.

Some people believe they cannot do it by themselves and someone else's idea of a pre-planned diet is better. It is all a sort of brainwash until the brain wakes up again.

Another major reason why diets fail is lack of exercise. It is proven that exercise not only helps with flexibility and increases energy but
also helps burn the extra fat one consumes or has stored in the body. Dieting without exercise is only half the work and nothing can be
completed when it is done half way. In fact exercise comes before dieting for once you start exercising your body begins to feel healthier and thus prompts you to start eating healthier too.

Speaking of healthy living, most diets lack the health ingredient which in the long run brings the person back to cravings of deprived foods during the diet and thus begins the counter effect of dieting.

In addition to the above, supplements are good if one is taking what is needed such as vitamins or calcium however supplements only to lose weight or burn fat are not a normal process to the body. It is as though the body is working on overdrive which will result in a weaker immune system and fatigue too. Also by injecting foods ino the body that are alien to it, it takes it longer to digest so dumping unnecessary supplements in the body to quicken a fat or weight loss renders it weak.

Many other factors contribute to diets failing; one being malnutrition. One can indeed live on shakes all day but it is not healthy. There is
a reason why dieticians and doctors stress on the pyramid diet which incorporates everything one should eat on a daily basis. Substituting a salad for a shake is not the answer. Besides the body does not live on liquid alone even if the liquid contains calories. What most pills or shakes have is a suppressant for hunger so that whoever is taking them does no feel the need to eat or munch therafter.

A key word here is feel. Just because I do not feel hungry it does not mean I am not hungry. And so one can see how badly this is affecting the body's digestion by partial starvation and unhealthy intake. The result may not be obvious today but in the long run these diets do nothing but harm the immune and digestive system.

A great factor that most of us ignore is the label on the food we consume. When following a certain diet almost no one checks the labels, blindly believing the adverts as seen on TV. What sort of chemicals are in there and how do they alter the body's functioning system? These things are not advertised they are the fine print that no one reads. The fine print is the catch after all.

Not to pinpoint any specific diet, here are some questions that one should ask. What is so different about this meal I am paying for that I cannot prepare myself at home? What is so powerful in this supplement that I cannot do without naturally? And of course when contemplating any diet one should ask oneself; am I committed and willing?

Committment is another reason why people fail in everything including diets. We expect results very quickly knowing it is too good to be true . If it took years to accumulate fat and bellies will it be so easy to dismiss them in three months?

Ask anyone who trains at the gym and they will tell you how hard it is to lose the extra pounds or fat and yet how easy it is to pile them up. Can one expect a pill or supplement to override all forms of exercise and food intake and magically shed amounts of fat and weight in a short amount of time? It defies all logic reasoning.

Finally an essential part of staying healthy is moderation. Substitution is normal when one does not like meat and prefers beans. However since most diets are made of substituting normal earthly foods for chemicals it is clear to see how the substitution is inadequate and wrong. Depriving the body of a certain food giving it the illusion that it is being satisfied by some equal replacement will backfire sooner or later.

Also there is a threshold within our system whereas if we drink too much we throw up, if we eat too much our stomach hurts and if we eat things that are not in coordination with our body we may fall sick. One reason why pills and supplements don't work in the long run is because the body establishes a threshold for these intakes after some time and though results may be quick at first with the body overreacting they have no effect once the body has broken them down to what they are.Perhaps that is why diets are limited to a set amount of time. But still what happens to all the extras the body has extracted during the diet?

A healthy diet starts with the mind. It follows with exercise. It consists of awareness of the things we inject in our body. Routine is a killer and so it is with diets too. A healthy variation is what it takes. A combination of all major foods is necessary.Living purely on vitamins and minerals deprives the body of its energy.Living purely on carbohydrates blocks the body to flow naturally.
Living solely on protein prevents the body from fortifying its immune system.

Whatever the diet one must keep in mind that this is a life commitment not a trial of thirty days, that this is a long term goal not a short one, that it will better the body and not weaken it. Once these things are considered one might eventually reconsider the diet.
