when can one claim to be a writer? A self examination.
Someone asked why I write, now this I don't know or can't even explain. I am not sure if I am a writer. I do know this for a fact I am a reader. Words, they spin round in my head, in my mines eye. I read them in my soul and in the end they come out on paper. I wonder if that is what being a writer is. Reading the story in our minds and putting them down so others might share. The voices in my head, <no I am not schizophrenic> are the characters that become live breathing souls in gestation. My mind is their womb and my hands become their birth channel. Like all children born to a parent I wish my word children well and try to raise them right. Instilling in them, proper educate and morals. That is not to say that they must comfort to the so-called norm. It just means that they express their story line in the proper places at the right time. As in all families there are some of the word children who fall by the way side. I as the parent must choose then to either give up on them or love them for what they are; Accepting that they will never be more and that I cannot control how they are viewed. One of the hardest tasks I have ever had was to let my fledglings fly from the nest into public eye. Knowing I would have done the writing an injustice to hold on, keeping it for only my self. I will leave it for others to say if I am a writer or not. For me it is more than enough to hold claim to the title of reader.
It's been said that if you wake up and all you can think about is writing, then you are a writer. To be a great writer, however, that takes a lot more.

My view, you can claim yourself a writer! You have done the best that you can to nurture your words (children)and the job of a parent (writer) is to make them strong and send them into the world to survive and thrive (be read) Nice job. Rebecca
I train novice motorcyclists and sometimes they want to know well when does it happen, when do I become a motorcyclist? Our response is to say that if they have an interest in motorcycling and a desire to improve thier skill then they are a motorcyclist. They may be at a different point in thier motorcyclists journey than others but they are still a motorcyclist.
If we enjoy writing and are interested in improving our skill, we are writers.
