| The automobile industry can be broadly divided into passenger cars and commercial vehicles (this includes light commercial vehicles (LCV), heavy trucks, buses and coaches). Passenger cars are designed primarily for the transportation of people. In 2005, passenger car production reached 44.4m units, while commercial vehicle production was over 20.38m units. |
| The market share of total automobile production occupied by the passenger car sector has been falling since 2001, reaching 68.37% in 2005, down 0.58% from 2004. The commercial vehicles sector has increased its share of total automotive production from 29.1% in 2001 to 31.45% in 2005. |
| As of 2010, there are about 600 million passenger cars in the world, which accounts for about one car for eleven people. They include sedans, hatchbacks, SUV’s etc. LCV’s are mostly used for commercial purposes and have a weight of up to 3.5 tonnes. They include pickup trucks, vans and 3 wheelers and all commercially based goods or passenger carriers. Heavy trucks include firetruck, delivery truck, ballast tractor, crane truck and heavy hauler. |

| The growth rate of passenger car production was 0.69%, down from 5.13% in 2004. The growth rate of commercial vehicle production was 2.61%, down from 6.58% in 2004. In the period spanning 2001 and 2005, the highest growth in passenger car production was in 2004 at 5.13%, and the lowest was in 2005 at 0.69%, Cygnus places automobile (passenger cars and commercial vehicles) growth at 1.29% in 2005. |
| During the period spanning 2001 to 2005, the highest growth in commercial vehicle sectors was in 2002 at 8.3%, and production is expected to have grown 2.61% in 2005. General Motors (GM) and Ford, two of the biggest automakers in North America, have announced production cuts that will lead to lower global production growth rates in 2006 (Figure 3.2) . |
| The market share of total automobile production occupied by the passenger car segment has been falling. When compared to 2008, in 2009, the total production of vehicles in the world fell by 12.9%.The total production of cars, light commercial vehicles, heavy trucks and buses and coaches fell by 9.6%, 23.4%, 19.3% and 15.1% respectively. |
