I have written a contemporary Psalm
When I read the Psalms, I wonder at David’s ability to express his feelings—happy, sad, even angry ones about the unfairness of life. I decided to write a Psalm of where I am now and call it “Ella’s Psalm.”
ELLA’S PSALM
God, my protector, and friend who sees me:
I am weak and needy.
My years are many, but I want to tell of You
Because You saved us and will one day
Recreate our world in all its beauty,
Our home forever.
Writing about You is the only way I know,
I am not gifted with the Spirit’s tongues,
I can’t go out to help feed the poor,
I cannot preach to congregations with profound
Thoughts and charismatic voice.
I could not talk about feelings as a child.
My sanctuary was the forest,
My faithful companion a dog named Fluffy,
There I communed with God as only a child can;
I could write stories and feelings then,
I still can sometimes,
But there are few who read them.
My prayer is that someone will,
And my words will make a difference
For a weak and lonely soul.
Now I am old, and there is no Fluffy,
Only a shadow of the Black Dog.
Please use me, Lord, to get outside myself
And tell others the Good News.
