Can you really mix science and faith?
A major crisis arises when that which has been joined together by God is separated. Marriage is one such thing that the Scripture mentions in this regard (Matt. 19:3-6). However, God unites far more than just people. At creation, He instituted marriage (Gen. 2:24), but he also created emotions and intellect. Christians should realize that a marriage of thought and disciplines has been likewise established. Because of this, any separation of science and faith is in reality a type of spiritual segregation.
Spiritual integration is the reuniting of these functions. Consider the fact that theology is the science of faith. It is human effort, hopefully inspired, to interpret and encapsulate an inspired record. Science is a descendant of faith and should stay close to its parent. When science, expressed as medicine and technology, becomes separated from faith, then a variety of dysfunctions arise. For example, psychological disorders and behavioral malfunctions are not diagnosed or treated properly in the faith community. Confessions alone seek to correct what behavior has caused. Chemical imbalances are inappropriately managed by spiritual deliverance.
There is a plea amongst many Christians for an integrated approach to wholeness and health. Perhaps, the prescription involves the preacher, physician, technologist, and the scientist. The body is fitly joined together and each part contributes to the health of the whole (1 Cor. 12:14-25). Similarly, unity of all aspects of God’s creations, including thought and faith, is essential to our approach to spiritual and natural wellness.
