I'm answering this question, even though I do believe in God.  I'd like to explain why.

God gave me a fine mind. Not brilliant, but so capable. Capable of appreciating the beauty around me. Capable of thinking intelligently and choosing for myself what I want to believe. Capable of being sensitive and caring which I suspect is one of the main reasons people do not want to believe in God. They are intelligent, sensitive, caring people who can't equate a loving God with the atrocities that go on around us. I wouldn't be able to cope with all the evil in the world either, if I didn't pray so earnestly and frequently: " let me make a difference, let me bear the pain."

I think the hardest decision the Creator ever made was to let us have a free will. He knew perfectly well what that could lead to but wanted Man to lovingly choose to serve Him. Things got so messed up that He had to start over more than once. The flood, Abraham, Moses, and each time He tried to very carefully teach them the right way. Those were the major examples during Old Testament times. Finally he gave the best, the very best he had and sent His Beloved Son so that we could be freed from our evil desires. Not that we would never be tempted but that we could be victorious. I hope you won't mind if I say I care very deeply about you, and you are in my thoughts and prayers.

God is far bigger than we can comprehend. He is much more that just a big brother figure. We need to trust Him because He sees the present, the past and the future better than we grasp this very moment.

God didn't create evil. Evil is a result of Man taking his own way and the resulting degeneration. My theory is that mutations changed what was originally good into---trouble! How could there have been mutations in that perfect Garden-of-Eden type of existence? That perfect Garden of Eden existence was wiped out at the time of the flood. Too bad for us!
