What do you believe? This was the question that life posed to Author Dani Shapiro that stopped her in her tracks. She knew what her dad, an Orthodox Jew, believed for he had practiced his beliefs all her life. Though she marveled at his devotion, she had no resting place for her own. "Do you believe in God?," her son asked her curious about what he had obvious heard or seen with little boy ears or eyes. Having no authentic answer, she gave him the "what some" answer. You know how we do it. What some people believe is this and what others believe is that. She realized that he wasn't interested in what some people believe, he wanted to know what she believed. She was failing him unless she gave him a true answer. This put her on a journey to figure it out.
I love what she said. She didn't have an answer but she invited God into the question. Sometimes that is all we got. We haven't resolved the answer. And I know, as parents, we feel we must have all the answers for our kids. Honestly, that's a pressure that I'm not sure of the origins. Certainly, my parents were my authority but I found out later that their answers about God were so not mine. Heck, their answers about a lot of things were not mine.
As Dani said, "We don't get to choose what wakes us up." For her, it was a little child’s inquisitiveness about his existence. For you, it might be something entirely different. Regardless, I believe that part of our purpose in life is to find our way home. Martha Beck calls it “true North.” Some, like my parents, called it God.
One of the biggest hurdles that I face as a coach is this question about belief. My clients have dreams that they can articulate very well. Their eyes light up when they tell you about it. What hinders them is not the dream, it is what they believe about themselves. I’ve seen it happen over and over again. A client starts the journey excited. They are so motivated. The closer they get to their dreams becoming a reality, the more difficult the process. That’s when ambivalence shows up. It’s when their words say one thing and their actions say another.
So you might ask, “Coach Suzette what if I want something but deep inside I don’t believe I can have it?” I’m glad you asked. You have to unplug from the source of what is fueling your disbelief. Say your friends constantly tell you that you can’t do something. As long as they are in your head, you can’t move. So, you’ve got to get them out of your head and replace it with some new information.
I heard someone say that unless what’s in front of you is stronger than what’s behind you, you are doomed to go back. I have to keep my clients looking forward and moving forward. In essence, I have to keep them awake. I have to plug into why they want it and keep adding logs to that fire. The naysaying voices in their head lose their threat if they stay in the game. I know this. They start believing that they can actually have what they seek and their beliefs about themselves start to support it.
Life is not going to stop just because you are pursuing your dreams. Little Timmy will continue to have sports. Little Katie will continue to need this and that. Husbands, wives, employers, friends, family will continue to vie for your attention. That’s why coaches are so needed. As busy as people are these days with their families, their jobs, life in general, without someone to hold their hands and say, “excuse me,” as they walk them to the front of the line, they will always be last. There will be resistance in the beginning. It’s to be expected. Nevertheless, when you know that you know that you know that you deserve something, nothing can stop you.
I think back to when I decided to go back to college. I worked during the day and completed my studies at night. I was a single parent with all the single parent woes and demands on my time and my money. I had no family in the area. Add to that, I had not been in college for 15 years. The odds were not in my favor. Not at all. Still, I completed my second degree with a 4.0 GPA. My son? He grew up to be a fine young man. It wasn’t easy, but I found a way.
When you truly believe something, your actions line up with it. You find a way. The Universe will agree with what you believe. You don’t believe it? Look at your life. Everything in your life is a manifestation of what you believe--not just what you say, but what you truly believe deep down. That’s why belief is so important. Say, for example, I were to ask you, “Do you believe you deserve to be loved?” What would you say? Now let me ask you the most important question. “What does your life look like?” The latter is what you truly believe.
