How to begin to assess your sales performance

Increasing book sales activity is a challenge to first time authors, and some times break their spirit when there are few to no sales. Self published authors are in the book selling business whether they like it or want to acknowledge it. Once that book is published to the public it is a product that can either sit on a shelf in your house, or on the internet.

What you do with this product depends on your skills and desire. The reality is if something is not done, then you can’t expect sales, can you? And that maybe why you are reading this piece right now; you want to know why the few sales you had have dropped off.

Why have your sales dropped off? I can tell you one thing you probably are not aware of yet and that is you are in a business. Your business is your book. I remember when I went from being an employee to business owner it took awhile for “business owner” to sink in.

Business owners do not rely on one or two sources for business, they use what they have and keep adding ideas until the business is making money. Your work as a self publisher begins before you have the book in hand so even if you skipped over doing the work in the beginning, it’s not too late.

This is your baby, so FOCUS. Let’s look at what you have available. The internet is full of competition. Where are you on the net? Do you have a dedicated web site? How are you promoting? Who are your competitors? How are you different?

A drop in sales can mean two things: your topic is not desirable or your promotional efforts are limited. First time authors who rely solely on the internet to spread the word will experience sales drops. This is an alert to review what you are doing, correct it and get back in the game.
