If you are talking about or even just thinking about moving house then it's very likely that you are dis-satisfied in some way with your current home. Maybe it's too small (or even too large), in too remote an area with very little going on, or in the centre of a busy town with too much noise and traffic. There are a whole host of reasons to want to move to a different house and those reasons are different for each of us. Your home is a very personal thing and some people love the buzz of a town or city while others seek peace and solitude in the country.
The difficulty comes when you really do want to move but keep talking yourself out of it by making excuses. If for whatever reason you feel the desire to move then you will only regret it in coming years if you stay put. So take a look at these common excuses and see if they are preventing you from moving to a new home.
You would have to take on a larger mortgage
Taking on more debt is, of course, risky. What if you lose your job? But provided you calculate carefully how much you can afford, and stay within that limit, then you can minimise this risk. Buying a house is always risky but this risk is offset by the advantage of the security your own home brings, especially when you are older and the mortgage is paid off.
Use one of the online tools or apps that can help you calculate how much you can realistically afford. Be sure to include absolutely everything that is a regular cost, for instance don't just include your major weekly shops but also add up the various items you just pick up in local shops – bread, milk, a bottle of wine, newspapers, magazines, a daily cappuccino – these all add up.
Once you know what you can afford the risk will seem less risky and this excuse no longer valid for moving to a place that will, hopefully, be more suited to your life.
You would have to sort through all your junk
This can be a huge task particularly if you are one of those many people who have a very cluttered home. However, it is also very therapeutic to clear out your junk and moving house is the best time to declutter because we are effectively forced into it. And even if you want to keep it all, the process will help you to get it more organised so that you won't forever be searching for misplaced items. Being more organised can lead to a calmer atmosphere in the home. Sure it's a daunting task but think of the benefits.
If you really can't face it then don't use it as an excuse to get your dream home – there is another solution. Simply pay the removers to pack all your stuff.
It would unsettle the children
Children are highly adaptable to new circumstances – more so than many adults. Those old enough to understand what's going on when you move house will be excited by the adventure. The younger ones won't be unsettled because they won't really understand. As adults we assume children view change in the same way as we do but they carry none of our emotional baggage.
As far as children are concerned they just need to be with the people who love and care for them and provided that need is met the house is immaterial. But for you – if you are dis-satisfied with your current home then it will make you unhappy so a change to a new home can help to resolve that issue.
Provided you don't have unrealistic dreams there is no reason not to move house and find your dream home – or at least one close to a dream home.
We recently decluttered and it's like having a whole new home.
