You have to use all your force to close doors, you fall over things you didn’t even know you had and find things you’ve never ever seen before and are often left wondering how you even acquired them in the first place. This is the definition of clutter! Here are our six signs you have too much clutter and how to get rid of it – forever!

Many things in your home have a purpose or perhaps sentimental value, but there are more than likely tons of items you don’t even remember buying. If you’re not sure what’s in every drawer and cupboard in your home, then you may want to consider decluttering, especially if you see one of the six signs below!

You have more than one junk drawer

Every house has a junk draw or rubbish cupboard, in which items that you think are useful are kept such as batteries, blue tac, notepads and elastic bands. You are correcting in thinking that they are useful but if you have so many you need more than one drawer, then it’s time to get rid of some.

Someone asks ‘is that new?’ every time you wear it

Each time you look in your wardrobe you may think you have nothing to wear, but in reality you’ve probably still got clothes with tags on. If you take your time to look at each hanger you’ll more than likely find clothes you don’t even remember buying. If you get something out and it doesn’t fit/looks a bit worn/doesn’t suit you – then consider donating or scrapping it.

You can’t close your drawers

If your drawers are crammed full of clothes, odd documents from 10 years ago, outdated makeup and dried up bottles of nail varnish, the time has come to grab the black bag. If it’s not recent, and you haven’t used it in the past 6 months bin it! Aside from the important documents of course!

You’re too scared to open a wardrobe door in case it causes an injury

If you have to duck each time you open the wardrobe in case that unwanted Christmas gift or bath set hits you on the head it’s about time you decide what you’re keeping and what you’re not. Re-gift your unwanted presents, donate to charity or even sell your unwanted items and earn some pocket money.

You have enough non–perishable food to last a lifetime

The kitchen also comes under scrutiny when clutter is involved, so if you have endless packets of cupboard food either stop shopping and start eating or give to a local food drive or soup kitchen. Just check the use by dates first.

You still have stuff at your mum's house

If it wasn’t good enough to take with you do you really need it? It’s time to ask the question, are you actually going to use it again? There’s always the option for storage if your items really are that dear to you, but most of what you’ve left at mum’s house is stuff you’ll never look at again!

Whether you’re moving house and want to take less with you, or you’ve spotted some of the six signs above, why not take the time consider the benefits of a clutter free home – you’re sure to reap the benefits!
