If you keep debt for a long period it will add up to a big sum once all interest is added overtime. So it makes sense to avoid the interest piling up and potentially leading to more and more debt over time. These tips will show you how to easily cut the cost of your debt so you can take back control of your finances:
Keep detailed records
Firstly make sure you know exactly what you owe on every loan or credit card or store card and the interest you pay on each of your borrowings. Now list your income and your regular expenses (mortgage or rent payments, utility bills, food, phone bills etc), but excluding the cost of your debt, to see how much you have left in a typical month to repay debts. This will tell you how much you can afford to pay back each month and, clearly, if your debts are costing you more than this amount you need to make some changes asap.
Look out for 0% interest deals
Many credit card providers offer zero percent interest deals to new customers or existing customers (often those not using their card much). This can be a great way to cut debt costs but these deals are only for a limited period so make sure you can pay off the debt before the deal expires. If you are sure that you can then this is a perfect solution to minimise the interest you pay. You are unlikely to get such loans if you have a bad credit history.
Consolidate your debts
For those with various different loans it can make sense to consolidate your debts into one single, cheaper loan. Make sure the new loan has fixed repayments that you can comfortably afford so you can gradually work towards being debt-free. This can be a good option for many people but if you find you have a bad credit record it may be cheaper to ask a parent to act as a guarantor so you can benefit from guarantor loans.
If you need help
If you are already in serious debt then there are many free charities and services that can help you, such as National Debtline who provide advice on how to tackle your borrowings for your particular situation. Also, Citizens Advice offer confidential support and help to deal with your debt if it has become overwhelming, including helping to organise debt consolidation to one cheaper loan. There are many other organisations that provide free help and advice and the quicker you ask for help the quicker the problem can start to be solved and you can begin working towards a debt free life.
