As winter really begins to set in it can be rather a dreary season not just for seniors but for everyone. The cold, damp and often icy weather makes it harder to get out and about, and the shorter days are darker meaning that people prefer to be home sooner. This unfortunately means that many seniors find it harder to get out and stay more active during the winter months.
Fortunately, there are still plenty of activities that seniors can take part in during the winter months that can help them to stay busy and healthy. Research by the live-in care hub shows that taking art in activities can have a positive impact on the self-esteem of seniors.
1.Take a trip to the salon
Just getting out of the house and into different surroundings for a few hours can be a real boost to the spirits. Taking a trip to the salon to have your hair done or even your nails painted can provide a senior with company, and a real self esteem boost when you are not able to get out often. Men can also benefit from a trip out for a haircut or even a shave.
2.Social groups
There are plenty of social groups for seniors that run lots of activities, this might be bingo sessions or musical activities – these are a great way for seniors to get out and enjoy themselves during the colder weather. These sorts of clubs often run a pickup service making it very easy for the elderly person to get to the group. If you have a live in carer getting there should be something they can help you with.
3.Museums
Whilst museums may not be a practical activity for those with lower mobility, they can be a great activity during the winter, and they often have exhibitions which change on a regular basis to offer a great variety to their visitors.
4.Bingo
This is an incredibly popular activity, and not just with seniors, Bingo offers a very vibrant atmosphere that will really boost the spirits of anybody. Many senior centres run their own bingo games for local communities.
5.Lunch
Some care facilities run lunch clubs that are open to those who are not residents, this can be a great way of socialising. Whether you arrange to meet up with friends somewhere for lunch and remember it doesn’t need to be a fancy place, some garden centres have really good menus and special offers for seniors – with the added advantage of a stroll around the plants later or take a group trip this is a great activity. This is not only an activity that you can do with friends but also a way to meet up with your family without anyone needing to cook.
6.Exercise
Exercise doesn’t need to be strenuous, a trip to the swimming pool can be a great way for any senior to get a little gentle exercise during the winter months.
