Do you have what it takes to be a successful project management apprentice? Here are just a few of the traits a successful apprentice should have.

An apprenticeship is a very good way in which you can ease yourself into a career that you may have been considering - especially one for which you do not have the relevant qualifications. If you have been considering a career in project management, there is no better place to start than with a project management apprenticeship.

In addition to gaining the appropriate qualifications it is important to take a look at the traits that any successful project management apprentice will need, these are the skills that will help to make them a good project manager. Some of these are skills that you might already have but there are others that you might need to work on.

Be organised

To be honest this is a trait that will come in very handy in a huge number of jobs and an apprenticeship is no exception. Being able to organise your time and your workload effectively is a skill that may come naturally to some people whilst others need a little longer to work on it. The ability to show that you can organise things effectively is a trait that many employers will look for, especially in the field of project management.

Team work and communication

When it comes to project management the ability to work with others as part of a team is vitally important. Communication is a key skill that will help a project run smoothly so all members of a team need to be able to communicate with those they are working directly with as well as those they are reporting back to. When a project isnt going to plan and issues have been identified it is important for all members of a team to be able to come together and work through the issues to hopefully get the project back on track. This is really only possible where great communication and teamwork exist. The ability to show these skills even at an apprenticeship level will stand you in good stead.

A desire to learn

A good project management apprentice will understand that there are always new skills, techniques and methods to learn and will be eager to explore all the learning avenues available to them. Parallel project training is a great way to make sure that you are learning as much as you can with a view to progressing your career within the field of project management. Remember even senior project managers will go on training courses to keep themselves abreast of the most current industry thinking.

Flexibility

Sometimes projects don’t quite go to plan and that might mean a complete change of direction even if it is only for a short while. The ability to be flexible and move away from the task you have been set to work on another and help a team member is really important.

All good traits. I have found that mentoring apprentices is one of the best ways to learn skills.
