Education-Excellence in Falmouth
Falmouth Academy continues its international exchange program, greeting students from Baghdad, Iraq and partner schools in Bardejov, Slovakia and Heidelberg, Germany. Proceeding with Heidelberg’s Holderlin Gymnasium exchange program, German students will live this fall with FA families for two weeks while attending classes; FA German language students will visit Germany for three weeks in March.
Of the 1.3 million high school students competing for a National Merit Scholarship, 16,000 (less than 1 percent of each state’s seniors) qualified as semifinalists. FA senior Ashley Meyer of Falmouth is one of three Cape Cod students honored as such, along with DY High School and Nauset Regional High School students. Meyer gained the honor from high scores on the 2003 Preliminary SAT / National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT / NMSQT). Additionally she is a National Honor Society member and active in FA’s drama program, having acted, scene-written, and done stagecraft. This year she will instruct a creative writing elective available to any FA student, having spent part of the summer in a Columbia-University advanced creative writing program where she also took journalism.
Falmouth’s Heritage Christian Academy is a school where parents can feel confident that respect, faith, community-sensibility and creativity at home will be continued in school. The academy is a Christian Elementary School for Pre-K-8 and its aim is “to assist both home and church in providing an excellent program of learning based on strong Christian principles.” Its “key” is “in the special relationship that develops between teacher and student in a small, closely-knit community. With a student / faculty ratio of 10 to 1, teachers, students and their parents have every opportunity to know each other well.” Outside enrichment-activities include going to the historical village of Plymouth Plantation, informative visits from local professionals, and participating in the well known Falmouth Christmas Parade!

2005’s Commended Students
The following seniors have been named Commended Students in the 2005 National Merit Scholarship Program: Amanda Brougham of Plymouth, Daniel Klepacz of Brewster, Matthew McClure of Cotuit, Andrew McKay of Harwich, and Matthew Olsson of Falmouth. Congrats to all!
And, construction of a new, 20,000 square-foot science center has fully-commenced. The building contains 6 classrooms and labs, a conference and project room, lecture auditorium and the region’s only Foucault pendulum. Next summer, the project is anticipated to be finished.
The Laurel School
Heartstrings Returns!
Director of Admissions Nancy Thompson reports the following exciting news:
“The Laurel School in Brewster is pleased to announce the return of Heartstrings - our children’s choral singing group. Students from kindergarten through the elementary grades practice weekly to learn original songs which they share with the school and local community. Concerts are performed for organizations Cape wide upon request. The group is lead by Caroline Martin-Michnay and accompanied by Katie Clancy and Karin Pearce-Small, two other Laurel School teachers. Caroline teaches music and art at the Laurel School and also introduces all the children to American Sign Language. Caroline Martin-Michnay founded Heartstrings in 1995 along with her students. They performed all over the Cape and in Boston before she moved to Virginia. Caroline is now back on the Cape and will be working with a new group of children as well as some of the original Heartstrings children. She plays both the harp and guitar, and writes all the songs. Katie Clancy sings with the children and plays the keyboard. Karin Pearce-Small choreographs the movements and dances.
Over the years, Heartstrings has performed at the Annual Children Helping Children Concert at Cape Cod Community College as well as at local nursing homes, libraries, and community centers. They also had the opportunity to sing at Symphony Hall in Boston. In 2000, the group produced their first CD, Cape Cod Morning, which has already sold over 1000 copies. Proceeds from the sale of the CDs go to the Heartstrings Scholarship Fund for Laurel School students. Heartstrings enables the students to express themselves through their music and to give something back to our community. Heartstrings’ mission is to spread love through the voices of children.”

Nauset Regional Middle School
A Reputation for Culture and Technology
Located in Orleans, this school gives 700-plus students from Brewster, Orleans, Eastham, Wellfleet and Truro “high academic standards and student involvement.” In a gorgeous environment with new facilities, students enjoy fine culture including excellent art, music, technical / computer education, French and Spanish, Family / Consumer Science, and sports. High-speed Internet access resides in every classroom and there is a modern library media center. And, many student clubs are available to students. Teachers often devote chunks of time to unique projects.
