Events in our Second Homes
Libraries are like second homes -- with warm-hearted librarians, book groups and neighbors. They offer pure solace through venues of quiet reflection, shared or alone. The following upcoming programs reflect our libraries’ magic via group events for any age, holiday gatherings, tile painting, quirky festivals and holiday sing-alongs!
South Yarmouth Library
“Fiction-to-Film”

Jonathan Bourne Public Library
Assistant Director Diane M. Ranney reports the following adult events set to occur in the Main Program Room unless said otherwise:
November 11th (Veteran's Day) 7 p.m.: Supporting Our Troops Here and Abroad
Mary Pignolet of Falmouth Military Support Group will speak about how the community can support military personnel (particularly in Iraq and Afghanistan); what to send, how to send items and to support military families at home. During the same program, Dr. Tony Dingmann, a psychiatrist, will speak about his experience in Iraq and how the community can better understand and aid military personnel in the transition to the home front, after they have served in a war zone. Refreshments will be served following the program.
November 15th - December 18th is "Fine Free Month"
During this time, any fines collected by the library are donated to the Bourne Food Pantry. If a patron wishes, a fine may be "paid" by donating two or more non-perishable food items. Food is collected by the Library staff and given to the Bourne Food Pantry. Long-standing fines and replacement costs for lost items are NOT included in this "offer".
December 3-5: Christmas in Old Bourne Village:
Friday, Dec. 3rd at 5:45 -- A Town Crier (will hopefully!) lead townsfolk and visitors to the Library for the formal lighting of the Christmas tree on the front lawn of the Library. At 6 p.m., the Bourne High School Band will play, carolers are invited to join in, and the tree will be lit. Saturday, The Library will be open (as usual), with a "Tree of Hope" inside -- patrons are urged to bring scarves, hats and mittens to hang on the tree inside the Library. The outerwear is donated to homeless people. In addition, if patrons wish to donate toys and gifts for children ages infant to high school, they are encouraged to bring the items to place under the tree from Dec. 3-16th.

November:
Cape Cod Children's Librarian's Roundtable is hosting "Families Connect . Your Library" at the Cape Cod Community College on November 13 from 2-3pm. This event is in recognition of National Children's Book Week and Massachusetts Literacy Month. This year the comedy team of "Gould and Stearns" will perform. This is a family event that focuses on libraries and reading. Tickets are $3 in advance at any library on Cape Cod and $4 at the door. The Jonathan Bourne Public Library will sponsor a "Sweet Tooth Social" on November 18 from 6:30-7:30pm in recognition of National Children's Book Week. The price of admission is non perishable food items for the Bourne Food Pantry and a dessert to share.
December:
"Christmas in Old Bourne Village"
The Jonathan Bourne Public Library participates each year with a puppet show on Friday night, December 3, with two shows – 5:00 & 6:15 p.m. This is free and open to the first 80 people at each showing. The Tanglewood Marionettes will perform "The Fairy Circus." The Christmas tree in front of the library will be illuminated for the season at 6pm with the Bourne High School Band playing Christmas music for a sing-a-long. There will be a pancake breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 4. The cost is $5 a person. Tickets will be available at the Children's Circulation Desk starting November 16. There will be two seating 8 & 9:30am.
“Holiday Tea”
The Children's Department is sponsoring a Winter Wonderland Tea at the Library on December 13 from 4-5:30pm as a fund raiser for the children's programs. The tickets are $!0. Tickets will be available starting November 23.
Dennis Memorial Library
Tile Painting is taking this library by storm! In September, Librarian Nancy Symington said, “The program has over one-hundred tiles the kids have already painted which will go into a new children’s room and be up forever.” Admission fee is $35 and you may call the library at 508-385-2255 to arrange a time for kids to paint.
Eastham Public Library
Curry Hoskey, Children’s Librarian, reports this special event:
NEW EVENT! TEEN BOOK BUDDIES READING TO CHILDREN AT THE EASTHAM PUBLIC LIBRARY! On Saturday, November 6th at 10:30 a.m., the library's new "Book Buddy" teens will read picture books aloud to children ages 3 and up. The event is the first of a potential series of "Book Buddy" read-aloud sessions. Beginning readers can also "turn the tables" on the teens and read aloud to them! On Saturday, November 20th is The Turnip Festival, a quirky-for-all celebration with food and turnip-lore. Place and time will be announced as the date draws near. Contact Tricia Ford at 508-240-5950 or ford.easthamlibrary.org for more information. Also on the fall agenda, Congressman William Delahunt will speak -- The date and time will be announced. Then on December 18th at 2 p.m. the library will hold a Holiday Sing Along with refreshments. The event is free, co-sponsored by the library and Eastham Historical Society, and a “good time for kids!”
Provincetown Public Library
The Provincetown Public Library fosters photographic, craft and other-art exhibition, reflecting a local, cultural role for artists of and around Provincetown. An educational force, it will also display educational exhibitions sponsored by schools, town departments, public service agencies, and civic organizations!
