Hundreds of dogs have been found in squalid conditions in a windowless 60ft (18m) garden shed in West Sussex.
204 starving Yorkshire terriers and six dead dogs were found in small carrier boxes full of excrement after the death of their 73-year-old female owner.
Lisa Gooch, from Brighton Animal Action, said: "I've never seen anything so horrific in my life.
"They were dripping from the urine they had been in for so long. Six of them were dead," she added.
Miss Gooch believes the dogs have been kept in the shed for years.
"Each of the cages was two-thirds full with excrement," she said.
They were discovered on a remote lane in Hurstpierpoint, near Burgess Hill, on Saturday evening.
"Many of the dogs were puppies and some were just two weeks old and still with their mothers.
"They were all absolutely starving and thirsty but there were a lot that were just so weak they were on death's door."
Worthing and District Animal Welfare spokesman, Billy Elliot, said: "They were almost walking as if they were crouching down, as if they had never stood up."
Miss Gooch said some of the dogs were going to need a great deal of care.
The dogs were taken to three local animal welfare charities, including the Celia Hammond Animal Trust based in Wadhurst and the Kit Wilson trust near Uckfield.

I will ask right now after I type this line to have Almighty place protective barriers around them all.I just placed powerful light and healing upon them in the angelic realm. Thank you for caring. We must keep writting about love, injustice and compassion, Peter we must. I was told by my guides today that others don't want the light of love to be spread.. They know our guides are so powerful.I had said multiple prayers today that the darkness be REBUKED by the Lamb, Peter. We are the ones sending the light. WE must continue to keep EXPOSING what's going on... My prayers for all of earths life be glorified by the Lamb. Bless you for walking the light..
This is absolutely heartbreaking! The wrong kind of animal love can be just as horrible as hate toward those poor creatures. The old lady must have been very lonely, if no one ever realised what was going on there, which is just as sad as the dog's suffering misery.

I suppose the old woman died alone if no person realized the dogs were in need.
This makes me so mad I could spit. I don't curse but Jerry sure did it for me. Poor little puppies. What was wrong with this woman? Where were her family and friends? Did absolutely no one know she had these animals? Don't they bark? I have a zillion questions. Peter...please post a follow-up.
