Police said the suspects planned "al-Qaeda-inspired" attacks | Police in Canada have arrested and charged 12 men who they say were planning an "al-Qaeda-inspired" bombing campaign in and around Toronto.
Five other youths have also been charged, following an investigation involving more than 400 officers.
Police seized bomb-making materials in a series of raids in Toronto, including three tonnes of ammonium nitrate.
Officials said the group "posed a real and serious threat" with "the capacity and intent to carry out these attacks".
Ammonium nitrate is a commonly-used fertiliser.
"To put it in context, the 1995 bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City that killed 168 people was completed with only one ton of ammonium nitrate," said Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) assistant commissioner Mike McDonell.
"Our investigation and arrests prevented the assembly of any bombs and the attacks from being carried out," he added.
Southern Ontario is one of the country's main economic and business centres.
'Violent ideology'
Officials showed what they said was evidence of bomb-making materials, a computer hard drive, camouflage uniforms and what appeared to be a door with bullet holes in it.

"We must remain vigilant," Mr McDonell said. "Canada is susceptible to criminal terrorist activity as much as any other country."
Police said those arrested on Friday were all Canadian residents "of different origins", most of them citizens - some were students, some employed, others unemployed.
The suspects appeared to have "chosen a violent ideology inspired by al-Qaeda", said Luc Portelance, assistant director of operations for the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), Canada's spy agency.
More arrests are said to be possible.
The suspects are to appear in a Toronto area court later on Saturday.

I heard about this today and I was again disgusted at the hatred.. I mean why is there so much hatred coming from this group of souls??? It's ridiculous..!!!!!!!!. I was very concerned. I was living in Canada a couple of years ago and there are many immigrants from all over the world. They do not screen enough for these kinds of happenings. All because many nations are simply not strong policaly.. Canada and the U.S are trade partners but the governments can't stand one another..Why??? Because Canada has liberal left wing views, leaglizing drugs like pot, ect.....I could go on forever...I pray Canada will change it's ways and moderize their secret intelligence operations.Maybe they can learn from America. God knows we have the best intelligence, but still, we can't get every single person. I will after I type this pray for Canada. As always thank you so very much for highlighting many social issues. God, just wish this world would stop the hatred. Light workers have to have a life long true desire to be of the light. I see many lightworkers becoming carnal, into the flesh, what's in it for them, attitude. To be truly devoted to the cause of humanitarian and light takes desire, acknowledment and will power. We are all tempted with the carnal realm.It is up to us as a world if we choose to live by spirit of love true agape or by flesh, selfishness..The chioce is ours.
