A Cure For Writer's Block?
Not too long ago I mentioned having Writer's Block in a Blog I posted. Now I understand that Blog are personal information on the person who posts, while everything else belongs here--in the articles section. So, I have gobs of articles posted as Blogs.
Anyway, the last incidence of Writer's Block was caused by the death of a major character--see Blogs. But many other things cause this condition and I've come to recognize a few. One cause is something stored in your subconscious mind that refuses to let go. What this means is that indirectly the writer is aware that there's a mistake in their novel. Whether it be in the time frame--it's June; chapters later it's suddenly december--character description--she has blue eyes; pages later you've made them brown-- or perhaps you messed up on the storyline, subsconsciously you're aware of the mistake, but won't pick it up until you go back and reread your text. Or maybe you're aware of the error and it's on page 30 and you're now on page 40. Correcting the error means changing facts in the ten pages you've written since then. So you let it go. But your mind won't. The same thing happens when you're not satisfied with the way your plot is going but refuse to make changes. You wind up with a nagging feeling that just won't let you continue until the plot's corrected. Or maybe you're just tired, burnt. Maybe you overshot your original schedule. Instead of the planned 4 hours a day, you're writing for 6. Sometimes you need to back away for a few days, reread your text, then start over. This generally works for most of the authors I know. Heck, if you've tried everything else, why not give this a try?
