How does shakespeare'Macbeth reflect the problems of the time and spirituality.

Is Shakespeare's Macbeth,a play about spirituality?The work exposes the contrast between the angelic King Duncan versus the witches and a bloodthirsting Macbeth.
In Shakespeare's time,James the 1st who wrote books on Demonology,was fascinated by satanism and witchcraft and often disguised himself as a woman to attend witch rituals _During the sixteenth century,in Stratford-upon-Avon,the local puritans in their pamphlets,condemned the theater and local feasts as pagan rituals_

But Shakespeare's theater stems from the celebration of cyclical seasons and rites of passage.Classified as a work of High-Renaissance,Macbeth is a reflection of the dilemmas of the epoch:as misery and sickness ravaged the farming land and hierarchy between the elite and the population was dogmatic,Shakespeare's works are a mirror of History. Women's roles are questionned(Lady Macbeth's passionnate soliloquy),fidelity to a king is undermined,rumors flood the urban environment...Faeries,elves, and goblins(Puck) were not popular at the time and people from court still believed that vicious Godmothers could cast spells on babies("The changeling").The religious rituals remained important as the soul had to rest in peace :Life was perceived as seven stages_from birth to funerary rites...

Macbeth questions the existence of God and the King who is a similar figure is murdered and the witches triumph_Lady Macbeth 's insanity ,confronted by reality and her own guilt,is a powerfull figure in the unraveling of the tragedy:the witches foresee actions and bloodshed but they do not have the final word.

Shakespeare ,as a philosopher and playwright,is perhaps telling the crisis felt at that period as death is perceived as a superficial rite...Although Macbeth is a tragedy,hope is engendered by the triumph of good over evil(paradox)..And in this manichean world of Shakespeare's,the greyish hues of doubt question spirituality and humanity ,as both are intertwined.
