Free Free

"David Pogue of the New York Times has an interesting story about how fewer and fewer people believe that infringement is wrong. He mentions talks he gave back in 2005 where people were willing to believe that making backups of DVDs you own is wrong.
Today, however, at his talks, he was only able to get two people out of a crowd of five hundred college students to say that downloading a movie or album is wrong. He goes on, like many before him, to bemoan the immorality of young people today, saying: 'I do know, though, that the TV, movie and record companies' problems have only just begun. Right now, the customers who can't even *see* why file sharing might be wrong are still young. But 10, 20, 30 years from now, that crowd will be *everybody*. What will happen then?'"

My bet is that it won't take 10 or 20 or 30 years before the concept of free and sharing makes a major impact on the sale of DVDs of any type of entertainment, writing, education, or anything that can be made digital . How so, you say?
The reason is that the concept of free will be used by an ever increasing pool of talent to present their work directly to the people who appreciate their work. It will be a fan system.
The star system is breaking down, and will continue to crumble because there is no way to control the product distribution. And product distribution control is the foundation of the present star system. The system makes the stars, sells their product, and makes a profit.
Stars in the future will be made on YOUTUBE version xxxx, and all the YOUTUBE evolutions and revolutions to come.
Right now, today, the group that is going to replace whatever super star is your present favorite are knocking themselves out in some garage somewhere in the world. It could be a writer that is going to write the next landslide novel. Their path to the stars will be digital and probably have nothing to do with the major labels or publishers we have today.
So, how to make a buck? Better yet, an euro, smile. The rising model at the present time is to free free the original concept, and if it catches on and starts to gather eyballs, thousands of eyeballs and then millions of eyeballs then start selling ads.
You notice that Author's Den is using that model more and more.
