Who did the 'Democracies' of the West Think They Were?

In World War Two, who killed more French sailors at their posts aboard their warships than any other military force? Answer: The British.

When the French government capitulated, Churchill realized that Hitler not only controlled all of mainland Europe, but also was on the verge of capturing the French fleet, third largest ocean-going navy in Europe. Combined with the German U-boats, the Saxon battleships and heavy cruisers could effectively lay siege to England. The Prime Minister did not hesitate. While British soldiers were dying on the beaches of Dunkirk, the RAF attacked and sank every ship of the line in the French fleet at its moorings.

Think how the families of the sailors who died on those ships felt. Even as Paris declared itself an open city, their supposed ally joined in on the killing of the French. Churchill was probably wrong. The remnants of the French Fleet in foreign ports, in French colonies remained neutral.

When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and began the invasion of the Philippines and washed over the islands of the Pacific, what did Roosevelt do? Did he throw what little forces we had against the tsunami of tyranny sweeping toward Hawaii and ultimately the West Coast? No. He launched it in the other direction, into the Atlantic, at Germany, who had made every effort not to antagonize the United States, even as we blatantly violated our neutrality as well as our own laws to supply the British through the Lend Lease program. The President left Mac Arthur and the Filipinos at the mercy of the Butchers of Nanking, all to support his Lilly white brothers of England. Why did no one shout for an investigation into Roosevelt's blatant violation of America's neutrality? Where were the Republicans?

When we did attack in the Atlantic, was it in Europe, where French, Polish and Eastern Europe were supposedly under the yoke of tyranny, even though the average French had rushed from their homes and joined the Nazis in their social goals? (Ultimately, more French worked for and actively supported the occupiers than joined the Resistance) No. The British and the Americans attacked North Africa. And over what? You guessed it. Oil. To deny Hitler the oil of the Middle East, the Allies landed at Casablanca, a French territory, and the harbor where the last of the great French fleet lay moored. The French admirals had refused to join the Italians, keeping themselves neutral in the war. When the American fleet arrived and demanded the French to greet them as liberators, the Saxon navy had had enough. They opened fire on the Allies, and were promptly blown out of the water.

And what were we fighting against? Nazism, Fascism, which is, after all, nothing more than a slight variation, economically, than socialism (Nationalist Socialist). And what is socialism if not Social Justice? Hilary Clinton's health care plan could have been lifted whole from the enlightened system of Mussolini.

The modern world war we’re in right now is even based on the same injustices that brought Hitler to power. Hitler could point to World War One and the Versailles Treaty, and the humiliation it heaped upon Germany. Osama Bin Laden points to the very same war and the humiliation of the Muslim world with the destruction of the Ottoman Empire, its parts broken down into territories and colonies of the French and English. Iraq, Iran. Saudi Arabia, didn’t exist until the League of Nations created them, very much to the benefit of the Europeans.

What of the atrocities of Hitler? Awful of course, but the same had already been done to the Kurds with no world out-cry. No one had complained. Ultimately Stalin killed twice as many of his own people than the Nazis, and political history professors world-wide still consider him the greatest leader of that generation. And what does it all seem to ultimately spiral back to but the Jews.

My point, of course, is that re-writing history sucks. We were right then, we’re right now. You want to criticize, do it after we've won the war.
