Mallorca has not only beachs, and sun, and evenings to drown with rum as we look at those fiery senoritas, Mallorca also have people that are from another epoch, when the world had chivalry.
One of those peoples are Don Rogelio, a first among equals...a Noble Gentilhombre.

Don Rogelio Cerdá Rotger, un Gentilhombre

When Don Rogelio was just a little boy companion to his father, they where nearly caught by a water twister aiming right at their fishing-boat in the middle of the sea.
The heavy fishing-net would have make it impossible to run out of the way, so the father of the child, without thinking twice took a machete, cut the nets free, and they run for their lives.
The little boy leaned then and there to take decisions on the stride before catastrophe could reach where we find ourselves with no options at the point of no return.

Mallorca is in Spain side of the Mediterranean Sea (Menorca and Ibiza are its little sisters) have small secluded bays holding the most crystalline, warm and calm waters.
But the attraction of the island is their people, they crack a smile by the small provocation filling the air with the scent of a sincere welcome.

From backpackers bred and breakfast to five star hotels, from fancy restaurants to Mom & Pop eateries using the sidewalk as their meal’s room, if you ever get hungry in Mallorca is because you really aren’t in Mallorca and should check with your travel agent or the leader of your highjacked jumbo-jet team.

You can go forever among people minding their own business and never need to exchange pleasantries with perfect strangers, which it is OK if you happen to be an eremite not looking for fun and are lost in the city streets.
But if you are one of those souls that will pick up any challenging glove or always ready to throw your hat in that ubiquitous ring…
Then, and only then, you are suitable to duel with the finest Castilian’s words with Don Rogelio, a suave spoken Gentilhombre (Gentleman, Squire) that by a caprice of the Spaniards gods came out from one of the Velazque’s paintings representing the Kindom’s Court in Castilla, with its ladies sporting elaborate hair forks holding mantillas and Noblemen Gentilhombres.
You will find Don Rogelio as the Consierge of the Bahia de Pollensa Apartments complex in Porto de Pollensa, a secluded small bay foremost Northwest of the island that arches from Cap Formentor making almost a circle to touch the west end of the bay of Alcudia.
First impression? The posture of the man and the benign smile of welcome put the most aggressive traveler, arriving after hours of waiting for the airline to retrieve his baggage now on its way to Timbuktu and his taxi getting somewhat “lost,” at easy.
He will make a few phone calls as the swearing passenger sips a complimentary drink and voilá, a representative of his Travel Agent miraculously and breathless appears with the mystical suitcases.
Some passengers will go through without a “thank you” but few I think will ever do that after being in front of a man that will remind them of the El Cid (meaning The Lord, the one that fought the Moors in the liberation of what today is Spain) not for any menacing demeanor, but for his posture of Caballero, like one of those Capitan’s that protected King and Queen like the French Musketeers did with theirs.

Don Rogelio seems to be a man, and yet, he is more than that, he his a fountain of knowledge, ready to discuss any theme at any level, and, like a sponge absorbing every word heard that would complete a previous information.
In the late night hours, before this tourist headed for a waiting cool bed, our nightcap wasn’t a libation of a dark nectar dancing around ice cubes but a little short discussion about the merits of burning Hell against eternal rejection Hell.
Kind of fencing a little with our swords to see if we could give each other a little cultural stab to get even for some previously point lost.

Mallorca have many treasures, the room where Chopin composed his music, the enormous Cathedral, the Roman citadel in Sineu, coves and grottoes, and even a humongous mini-golf complex in Palma Nova, and yes, they also should be very proud to have living among them Don Rogelio Cerdá Rotger, un Gentilhombre.

Mallorca also have people that are from another epoch, when the world had chivalry.

Then it's even a more wondrous place than I had imagined it to be. And thanks to you, brother, I have to add it to my long list of 'places I need to visit before I die.'
