Yeah right. Now I know some people do not like me using the generalisation "scientists" when I'm about to ridicule some piece of academic fuckwittery, but when the press release begins with the words "Scientists at Stockholm University" who am I to challenge the classification. it is like "Christians" another word that has been stripped of all meaning. Be specific. Tell us what you are all put up with being stripped of meaning.

Quite what the point of this research is, other than the team had a big fat research grant sitting around and could not think of any sensible project to spend it on, we may never know. Are they trying to find a cure for homosexuality? Ooer, that's not very PC is it. Still it could be a stem cell project - inject these cells into the foetus and your kids will not be a bender or a rug muncher. I could see there being a market for that among some flavours of Christians but sadly the realities of human sexuality are much more complex.

The very first thing that struck me about this research is that were its basic premise correct, all gay men would be mincing queens like Alan Cumming and all lesbian women would be tweed wearing, pipe smoking dykes like K.D. Lang.

First prob: the public personas projected by performers are not necessarily representative of the real person, they are caricatures.

That the research appears to confirm such stereotypes makes it a tad suspect. If the male homosexual brain is wired towards effeminacy where do all the tweed wearing, pipe smoking butch queers fit in? And if the lesbian brain is wired towards tweed wearing, pipe smoking bull dyke stereotype, where did all the gorgeous, feminine, eminently shaggable lipstick lezzas come from?

What the scientists have succeeded in doing once again is proving the futility of trying to measure and classify something that is infinitely variable and thus unmeasurable. The human psyche.

Most of us like sex and if social taboos and conditioning were removed most of us would be happy to get it where we can.
