Sir, This is in reply to your query dated September 14 1814. Let me preface my remarks with an apology for the delay in our response. I realize that some people might think that one hundred and eighty seven years delay might be excessive but I hope that you would understand the exigencies of war and uncertain means of communication might delay this missive. I have to inform you that we are still at war. You may have missed some information due to your confinement so, with your permission, allow me to enlighten you upon the current state of affairs. The Colonies are now their own nation. The French fleet that menaced our ships is now aligned with English and American navies to combat the new threat. Vigilance is still our watchword, but it is no longer between my country and yours. Instead, both England and America have become steadfast friends. The war we now fight is against unknown and faceless enemies; but we are fighting it together. And we will prevail. To return to your original question; I believe you asked, “Does that Star Spangled Banner still wave o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?” I have done extensive and exhausting searches in my endeavors to answer your query.
