There is not much I can add here to what you will read below

My poem, “Don’t Judge me Brother,” has truly brought about some wonderful dialogue.

So much so, that I feel I should clarify what I was saying but in attempting to put it in rhyme I believe I lost some of what I wanted to say.  One cannot justify murder.  We cannot make excuses for stealing and we cannot make excuses for hatred.  These things we see and we must be willing to see what we see for what it is.

The point I was making with my poem was that we should judge ourselves and realize that we are not perfect.  This leads us to confess our sins and shortcomings and try harder to please our Lord.

If my poem did not reflect all of this I feel I should point out that I truly believe in God and Jesus and because I do, I know myself for who I am.  I confess everyday for I am not yet made perfect.

If I judge you, I judge myself with the judgment with which I judge you.  If I am critical of you I am guilty of judging you.  Judgment should be something I consider for myself.  I will let God Judge you.  He is prone to be fore forgiving than I am.  When he is angry, you will feel his wrath, as will I.

I quoted Jesus when he said, “you judge a tree by the fruit it bears.”  I believe he meant just that.  If it has pears on it, it is not an apple tree.  Jesus also said, “As you judge others, so shall you be judged.”

I truly believe what he meant is this:

I am truly better off if I spend more time scrutinizing myself and take a forgiving attitude toward my Brothers and Sisters in Christ.  He will forgive me but he wants me to admit there is something to forgive.

In the meantime, I am trying to become more in tune with his ways and less likely to sin.  Less likely to hate or to put down someone who does not believe in God in the same way I do.

Moreover, I am thrilled with the feedback because dialogue like this is how we all grow in Christ.  I praise you and I pray for you all.

May God be with us all, now and forever.

Hi Lew, in support of you and your poem, which I though was terrific, here is what Jesus said in John 12:47 and 48, "And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not; for I came not to judge the world, but to save it. He that rejected me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him; the word that I have spoken; the same shall judge him in the last day." In Luke 6:37, He said, "Judge not, and ye shall not be judged; condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned, forgive, and ye shall be forgiven..." Verse 41 "And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest no the beam that is in thine own eye?"
You're absolutely right about judging others...we shouldn't. Jesus wrapped up the ten commandments into two: love God and love thy neighbour as yourself. I'm certainly glad God's love is unconditional...which means He loves us no matter what, and how He loves,is and never can be controlled by us...

So, keep following your heart, Lew, the Holy Spirit is strong in you. I enjoy reading your work and the sincerity with which you write flows through.

Cheerio for now...
God Bless
Lena

Lew, I understood what you were pondering in verse. My response probably reflected my Scottish presbyterian and brethreen roots (Christian roots. I was saved at age 31). Even without these roots I have no problem with a judicial approach to wrong doing - in my former line of work I had to filter out the genuine from the fake claimants. For this I needed discernment which is another word for judgement. It was a judgement based on the department's rule book. In the same manner, we judge behaviour in the world not according to our own flawed standards but by the standard of God's infalable word. I think within the church people are touchy about certain matters involving attributes such as judgement. For example, the use of gifts such as healing, tongues and prophecys stirs fierce debate and has caused division. Even doling out forgiveness as a blank cheque sparks opposing views. Indeed apportioning God's love freely whether as conditional or unconditional is a topic of debate among us Scottish believers. In other words, do we have a right to tell folk that God loves them? Not all believers think we have that right. They argue that His love is discretionary, He loves whom He loves, hates whom He hates (Cf Jacob/Esau)
I knew where you were coming from Lew, but the reaction you have received, I believe, confirms what I have said here.
