One of the wonderful things about AuthorsDen is the opportunity to share ideas with other authors. This is food for thought which was inspired by a conversation with one of them.

I have been communicating with a friend who mentioned that life without sex seemed dull. It could… I guess! But I wrote a piece which caused him to respond that way. I have been contemplating this and finally decided to create some more discussion.

Let us define passion.

1. A powerful emotion, such as love, joy, hatred, or anger.

Oh my. Passion is a powerful word. It can mean great love, as well as sexual attraction. It can mean a great and wonderful feeling of joy. In my case with my past history of heart problems this would mean a wonderful joy of living. Passion can also be anger or hatred. Well… I guess everything has its dark side. Such a waste. I prefer the joyful kind, myself.

a. Ardent love.
b. Strong sexual desire; lust.
c. The object of such love or desire.

I think I just mentioned sexual desire. That is a wonderful passion. Out of it comes a child who grows up and has passion and creates more children. God said, “Be fruitful and multiply.” He didn’t mean eat lots of fruit and learn your times tables. When that sexual desire is coupled with ardent love it becomes even more binding hence ‘C’, the object of such love or desire. When the passion for sex becomes less a factor the passion for the company of a loved one does not. It goes on if the love it strong and true .

3.
a. Boundless enthusiasm: His skills as a player don't quite match his passion for the game.
b. The object of such enthusiasm: Soccer is her passion.
Boundless enthusiasm... I guess that is what keeps me writing. I love to put my thoughts, beliefs and fantasies into words. Write them down and share them.

4. An abandoned display of emotion, especially of anger: He's been known to fly into a passion without warning.

My Dad had an expression for that. “Don’t go flying off the handle,” he would say. When I was a kid it was said that I had a temper. I think most kids do. It’s how you handle it that counts.

5. Passion
a. The sufferings of Jesus in the period following the Last Supper and including the Crucifixion, as related in the New Testament.
b. A narrative, musical setting, or pictorial representation of Jesus’ sufferings.

Now this one is really a strong definition of passion. It takes so many forms. There was great anguish that our Savior bore. He even asked, “If it be possible take this cup from my lips.” Why did he follow with, “Yet, not my will be done but yours.” That is great love. Maybe it an example of the greatest love. Painful as it was he had come to fulfill this mission and his passion would not let him turn aside from it.

Synonyms: passion, fervor, fire, zeal, ardor
These nouns denote powerful, intense emotion. Passion is a deep, overwhelming emotion: "There is not a passion so strongly rooted in the human heart as envy" Richard Brinsley Sheridan.
The term may signify sexual desire or anger: "He flew into a violent passion and abused me mercilessly" H.G. Wells.
Fervor is great warmth and intensity of feeling: "The union of the mathematician with the poet, fervor with measure, passion with correctness, this surely is the ideal" William James.
Fire is burning passion: "In our youth our hearts were touched with fire" Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.
Zeal is strong, enthusiastic devotion to a cause, ideal, or goal and tireless diligence in its furtherance: "Laurie [resolved], with a glow of philanthropic zeal, to found and endow an institution for ... women with artistic tendencies" Louisa May Alcott.
Ardor is fiery intensity of feeling: "the furious ardor of my zeal repressed" Charles Churchill. See Also Synonyms at feeling.

Now let me ask you something. What is boring about life if you have a passion for living? The fact is passion and excitement are one and the same. If you can find yourself excited about living day by day you have the greatest gift God can give you while you are still on this Earth.

The only greater passion I can think of is something that must be too great for me to even fully understand now. That would be meeting my Creator face to face and praising his son for his passion and undying love.
