If you are like me you have been watching the news and the more you see the less you want to see. We are fighting with global warming but nobody wants to admit it. We are fighting with other nations and even worse; we are fighting amongst ourselves.

            I am going to ask you to stop thinking like a Republican or a Democrat but as a citizen of the greatest Country on Earth.  Consider what is happening to us.  We are forgetting many of the things our founding fathers stood for.  We are divided on many issues from Social Security and Health Insurance to the war in Iraq and the tensions between our government and that of Iran.

            I want us to step back for a moment.  The problems in the world will still be there when we return but maybe we will be more able to consider who we are and what we stand for in the United States of America.

            It has been said, “A nation divided against itself cannot stand.”  I think we need to scrutinize ourselves.  This starts with our President, our congressmen; both Federal and state. 

            I read once that Democracy would work until someone finds out how to use it for his own selfish purpose.  We have performed a bit of a miracle.  After two hundred years we are still here and we are still a Democracy.  It’s that ‘selfish’ thing that worries me.

            John Kennedy once said in a speech, “Ask not what your country can do for you.  Ask what you can do for your country.”  I thought it was noble at the time.  As I grow older and see young men going off to die for this country it makes me wonder if those lives will not be lost in vain.

    We should all live by the late President Kennedy’s words.  But that is the clincher.  We should all:  If those who have sworn to serve the people use their position for their own selfish reasons how can they possibly expect us to follow like stray dogs?

            Man is inherently selfish by nature.  Christ knew that.  He spoke of it many times.  He also knew that much of what we are living through today was coming.  I have friends who say, “Don’t worry.  He’s coming soon.  These are the last days Jesus predicted.”

            These are indeed the last days but we know not how long a day is to God.  Jesus once said a day to God lasts a thousand years.  If you do not believe in Christ or God then I would suppose it is easy to eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow you die.  However if you do believe consider this. 

            What if Christ came tonight and found us simply sitting and waiting.  It’s sort of like the servants the master gave the talents too.  Those who put their talents to work were found worthy.  Those who buried theirs so they would not lose them were rebuked by the master.

            Getting back to the good ole’ USA, I can only say that if we are going to survive as a country we all have to put a lid on those selfish desires and start working together.  This is important from the very poorest to the very richest.

            I would challenge those multi-million dollar oil companies to start considering the prospect of investing some of their millions in some other source of power.  I would challenge each of us to use as little power as possible as a way of saying, “We care.”

            Our nation is just like a chain fence.  It can only be as strong as the weakest link.  Those who have the power have to consider the possibility that their power will mean nothing if we fall under the weight of our own corruption.  It happened to the great Roman Empire.  If we aren’t careful it could happen to us.

            Let us put partisan politics away for good.  We are all American’s.  There is no I in TEAM!  Are we willing to become a team once more?  We showed our might many times in the past.  The challenge is far greater today.
