There is something about the way our country’s voting system is set up that I take extreme exception too. I am a firm believer that the electoral Collage is not in the best interest of the voter. I believe this is why so many multi-million dollar businesses have taken control of our government and the people who were supposed to be the recipient of freedom and justice for all are paying the price. I also believe that while our government is catering to these giant corporations morale and patriotism are being lost.
Did you know that a candidate could actually get not one single vote ---not one – in 39 of our 50 states and yet be elected President by winning the popular vote in just eleven of twelve states? California has fifty-five Electoral College votes. New York has thirty-one. Texas has thirty-four and Florida has twenty-seven. Pennsylvania has twenty-one, Illinois has twenty-one and Ohio has twenty-eight. Another 75 Electoral College votes can be gotten from Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Georgia and Virginia. If you are unlucky enough to live in a state that has less votes this means your vote does not count.
Is it any wonder the politicians cater to the above states and don’t bother with states like South Dakota with is three electoral college votes or Nebraska with it’s five. If we were a true democracy it would be one man…. One vote. Somehow the Electoral College may have been necessary for our founding forefathers but today I believe it is not only unnecessary but undemocratic.
This may even explain why so many people have given up and don’t even bother to vote. The multimillion dollar corporations know where to send their money and the politicians, whether they will admit or not will follow that money trail.
We as Americans should speak out. Email, mail and phone your representatives and tell them we want equal opportunity. That means if you live in a small State you still have a right to represented equally. No Electoral College. Just a fair election where, win or lose we all can know we played on a level playing field.
I will be hoping for some feedback here because our country is doomed if we do not make some changes. One place to start is right here and right now.
