This is food for thought. It is true that all men are like the grass. Let us take a look at this. Grass grows in meadows and animals such as cows and sheep roam these pastures and eat the grass. We plant grass on our lawns but are careful to keep it mowed so it never reaches its fullest potential. A hot summer drought will cause the grass to turn brown and wither and die. It is extremely vulnerable to the elements. Man is like that.
Let us look at the flowers. Roses are a beautiful flower but its days are numbered. It blossoms and blooms, slowly unfolds into a thing of beauty but then it ever so quickly begins to wither and shed peddles one by one until there is nothing left but the stem.
The grass has this to be said for it. Those animals who feed on it are sustained by it. It is one source of life for them. Food and water are needed to sustain life and this is their food.
The flowers were mentioned in this passage because indeed they are beautiful and reflect the glory of God. One can become mesmerized by simply admiring a field of bluebottles blooming in the spring. The rose has become a show of romance. Who has not sent his loved one a bouquet of roses?
If it be true that all men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field then it is also true that all men will live and die. The question we must ask ourselves is this. What have we to offer so our lives will be useful to our Lord and God? Let us all search our hearts and souls and live our lives so as to glorify our Master so that our lives will not be lived in vain.
